Casinos, the french touch.

The World of casinos is opening up. Gone is the closed circle of slot machines, and no longer are Blackjack and poker tables almost exlusively frequented by men. From now on women can also be part of the action. They are many to animate tables, gather bets and explain the rules.
The world of casinos does not comprise only men. On the contrary. Stéphanie Tarzi is a 25 years young woman and a croupier for two years in a casino of Geneva. After working as a beautician (typically a woman’s job) for seven years, she turned towards the world of gambling rooms.

“It’s a trip to Las Vegas that inspired me to enter this magic world that I didn’t know at all ”is explaining this brown-headed girl with unshakable enthusiasm that rapidly adds she is actually “getting a real kick” out of what she is doing. As to know if it was difficult for her to be integrated to this a priori male environment, her answer is straight : “I’ve never asked myself this kind of question, especially because many girls are part of my team”.
Woman in the same way than men, are now part of casino’s staff, which confirms Sonia Goulet, her roommate and friend, with specifying that “mentalities changed a lot within the years and that it is not a man’s job anymore”. For this 22 years old young girl, that works as a croupier in the same gambling room than her friend, the acquaintance with the profession was more direct. Sonia never was in a casino before taking on the decision to become a croupier, she just knew she wanted to work at night. Within two years experience, she could say without any hesitation that she adores her job : “It is so beautiful in the casino !”
How to become a croupier.
Stéphanie and Sonia have another common point than living together : they are training to become a croupier. They both made it at the Cerus Casino Academy.
At the origin of this educational enterprise ? David Robert and Benoît Engels, cofounders of the school realised the non-existence of structures to learn the profession but that the demand to train was increasing. David Robert could bring in his knowledge in educational field and in pedagogy, Benoît Engels brought his knowledge of Casinos. Indeed after a debut in the Touquet, (coastal town in the north of France, Nord-pas-de-Calais region) Benoît Engels went to London, and then on cruise liners as casino manager. After september 11th the american compagny that was employing him closed and it brought him back to France where he felt the need to open a school.
Within three month, this training center is proposing to prepare youths from 18 to 35 for the profession of croupier, since 2003 and since 2005 for the profession of service engineer for slot machines. One of the advantage of this school is that it guarantees a job at the end of the training course.
For 30 years old Jocelyn Tapparello and 18 years old Edouard Glanglaud, the training is over in two weeks. Both found a job and even if they apprehend their real beginning in the world of gambling they say themselves ready and particularly exited !
It is a sucess for Cerus, indeed if the world of casinos remains a close environment in collective imagination, in reality it does not stop opening. Why ? First the casino’s staff is getting old, there has been no recruitment during a period of ten years, then the appeal of the french population towards casinos and finally that around 20 should be opening in the next few years.
The big number of job offers submitted to the center is representative of the activity that is generated in the gambling field.
Damien Engels, responsible of communication at Cerus is happy with the center’s reactivity. “We actually fulfil 60% of the job offers that casinos submit to us” . The 40% left, are seeking for croupiers …
